Gubeikou was a strategic pass of the Great Wall in ancient times, offering an important access to Inner Mongolia and northeast of China. The main part of the Gubeikou Great Wall was first built in the Ming Dynasty 1368, and composed of two main sections - Panlongshan Great Wall (the Coiled Dragon Mountain Great Wall) and Wohushan Great Wall (the Crouching Tiger Mountain Great Wall).

Huanghuacheng Great Wall Tour

Huanghuacheng (literally meaning "Yellow Flower City") Great Wall (黄花城), about 60 km north of downtown Beijing, is one of the most ruined sections of the wall in Beijing. It has become popular with hikers in recent years. This section of the great wall is about 1000 meters long and connecting Juyongguan Pass Great Wall and Badaling Great Wall in the west and Jiankou Great Wall and Mutianuyu Great Wall in the east. Now it is quite a challenge to climb the wall since it is overgrown and treacherous.

Huanghuacheng was an area littered with many villages in Yuan Dynasty. Later in Ming Dynasty it turned into a rich and prosperous area due to the construction of the Great Wall at Huanghuacheng as strategically important Benzhenguan Pass.

Hike from Jiankou to Mutianyu Great Wall Day Tour

Jiankou Great Wall is the greatest and most photogenic section of the Great Wall around Beijing. It is wild and totally unrestored. The tumbledown and crumbling brickwork snakes along a narrow mountain ridge. Mutianyu Great Wall was built in 1404. The fortifications and the Great Wall here are featured by many watchtowers on overlapping mountain ranges. The wall, built with slabs of stone, is crenellated on both sides with bricks. The wall provided better protection and ward off attacks with Jiankou in the west and Gubeikou in the east.

Currently, Jiankou Great Wall is still not officially open to mass tourism due to its risky hike as well as the government’s policy to protect the “wild wall”. If you choose to walk from Zhengbeilou at Jiankou Great Wall to Mutianyu Great Wall, the risk involved would be less. But still, you should apply for travel insurance for your coverage of injury or accident.

Tour Itinerary:

  1. Be met by your English-speaking tour guide or your private driver at your hotel.
  2. Drive to Jiankou Great Wall (2 hours).
  3. Hike Jiankou Great Wall to Mutianyu Great Wall:
    • For the first hour, we will clamber up the mountain and get to Zhengbeilou Tower on the wall atop the mountain ridge. The one-hour ascent to Zhengbeilou Tower from Team 2 Xizhazi Village is the most difficult part of your trip hiking from Jiankou Great Wall to Mutianyu Great Wall. This one-hour uphill walk is done along a narrow and steep bushy mountain path in a beautiful pine forest. Very often you have to have your hands on rocks, roots, and bushes for balance.
    • Starting from Zhengbeilou Tower on the top, then walk eastward ups and downs on the rugged wall snaking along the mountain ridge, passing through the wild and crumbling towers at Jiankou, and reach the restored and magnificent Mutianyu Great Wall. The hike takes about 4-5 hours for an 8km trekking.
  4. One hour scale up a steep hill to reach the wall, 2-hour hike along the unrestored section starting from Zhengbeilou Tower at Jiankou (Not advisable to scramble the section between the Upward Flying Eagle Tower and Zhengbeilou Tower) and 1-1.5-hour walk along a restored section at Mutianyu (many other tourists). You may get down from the wall at Mutianyu on foot (half-hour walking down) or take a cable car or toboggan. Cable car and toboggan are optional.
  5. Transfer back to the airport or your hotel (1.5 hours).
  6. If your time allows and you would like to have lunch, we can take you to a local restaurant; please pay the meal cost on your own.

Juyongguan Great Wall Tour

Juyongguan, literally "Juyong Pass" (居庸关), is situated in a valley named "Guangou" as long as 20 kilometers, which is within Changping District over 50 kilometers north from downtown Beijing. It is one of the three most famous passes of the Great Wall in China. The other two passes are Shanhai Pass and Jiayuguan Pass. The Great Wall around the Pass extends over 4 km, snaking the ridge of the mountains forming the valley. The natural landscape surrounding the Pass is extremely beautiful.

Juyongguan used to be an ancient military town full of military installations, watchtowers, official residences, temples, and other structures. Juyongguan Pass was first built in the Ming Dynasty and received much repair later. It was a very important strategic area linking the inner land and the area close to the northern border of China. The Juyongguan Pass has been well known for its strategic importance for over 2,000 years.

Mutianyu Great Wall Tour

The Mutianyu section of the Great Wall (慕田峪长城) is located in Huairou district, about 80 km north from downtown Beijing. The Mutianyu Great Wall is less crowded than the Badaling Great Wall.

There are 23 towers on the Mutianyu Great Wall snaking the ridge for about 3000 meters. The watchtowers at the Mutianyu Great Wall are distributed at short intervals. The 23 watchtowers are numbered from right (east) to left (west). The 23rd tower is the highest point of the Mutianyu Great Wall. In any Great Wall hike, it is good for your legs to hike up than to hike down. So we suggest you hike the Mutianyu Great Wall from the left to the right (from the east to the west).

Mutianyu Great Wall Travel Tips

Three Ways to Go up to Mutianyu Great Wall

There are three ways to get onto the Wall. Apart from hiking up on foot, you can choose to take the cable car or chairlift (Optional).

To get down the wall, you can also take the Toboggan slide down (Optional).

When you get off the ferry shuttle bus going from the shuttle bus terminal near the ticketing office, you still need to walk along an accessible stone path (600 meters long ) leading up first to the starting point for chairlift ( or toboggan down ), second to the walking path up to the Wall and last to the starting point for the cable car up to the Wall respectively.

So the mostly used Cable Car Station is at the end of the 600-meter stone slope. That said, there are three ways to go up to Mutianyu Great Wall.

  1. Taking chairlift to the Great Wall - to the 6th Watchtower ( or where you can take a toboggan down)
  2. Walking up the Great Wall along the stone steps (like a mountain hike - 30 minute hike) - to the 10th or 8th Watchtower
  3. Taking cable car up to the Great Wall - to the 14th Watchtower

The Most Beautiful Part of Mutianyu Great Wall

The hike from Watchtower No. 14 east up to Watchtower 23 is the most scenic part of Mutianyu Great Wall. Many people would choose to take the cable car up to Watchtower No.14 and hike east to Watchtower No.23. You may retrace to Watch Tower No.14 and take the cable car down the wall, or continue to hike down to Watch Tower No.8 and walk down the wall; or you may continue to hike down to Watch Tower No.6, then either take chairlift down or toboggan down.

Simatai Great Wall Tour

The Simatai section of the Great Wall (司马台长城) is located in the northeast of Miyun County, about 140 kilometers from downtown Beijing. It was first built in the early Hongwu years (1368-1398) of the Ming Dynasty. The Simatai Great Wall is cut into two parts by the Simatai Reservoir, over which there is a chain bridge running through east to west.

The Simatai Great Wall is 5 km long with a total of 28 watchtowers (East 16 and West 12). Constructed by the Ming Dynasty general Qi Ji Guang, it is one of the few stretches of the Wall that still preserve the original look of that period. It not only features unique points from other Great Wall sections but also shows some features found nowhere. To the west, there are 12 watchtowers snaking on the sloping hills. To the east, there are 16 watchtowers atop peaks up to 1,000 meters high.

The views are amazing. The wall at Simatai has received very little renovation. So Simatai Great Wall still retains all its original look. It is well beyond the reach of the great crowds of visitors who come to the more popular and easily accessible parts of the Wall.

When you get off the ferry shuttle bus going from the shuttle bus terminal near the ticketing office, you still need to walk along an accessible stone path (600 meters long) leading up first to the starting point for chairlift (or toboggan down), second to the walking path up to the Wall, and last to the starting point for the cable car up to the Wall respectively.

So the mostly used Cable Car Station is at the end of the 600-meter stone slope. That said, there are three ways to go up to Mutianyu Great Wall:

  1. Taking chairlift to the Great Wall - to the 6th Watchtower (or where you can take a toboggan down)
  2. Walking up the Great Wall along the stone steps (like a mountain hike - 30-minute hike) - to the 10th or 8th Watchtower
  3. Taking the cable car up to the Great Wall - to the 14th Watchtower

The Most Beautiful Part of Mutianyu Great Wall

The hike from Watchtower No. 14 east up to Watchtower 23 is the most scenic part of Mutianyu Great Wall. Many people would choose to take the cable up to Watchtower No. 14 and hike east to Watchtower No. 23. You may retrace to Watch Tower No. 14 and take the cable car down the wall, or continue to hike down to Watch Tower No. 8 and walk down the wall; or you may continue to hike down to Watch Tower No. 6, then either take the chairlift down or toboggan down.

Discovery of Cuandixia Village

Description

Cuandixia Village is located in Zhaitang Town, Mentougou District, about 90 kilometers away from downtown Beijing. Simatai Great Wall & Gubei Water Town Night Tour

Description

Gubei Watertown is located in Miyun County with a massive backdrop of the world-famous Simatai Great Wall, the romantic Yuanyang Lake (Mandarin Duck), and the ancient Simatai Village. It is a replica of Wuzhen Water Town in Southern China. The sightseeing and leisure travel area of Gubei Water Town opened on a trial basis, consisting of 6 areas, including the Old Barracks Area, Minguo Street Area (Republic of China Street), Water Street Area, and Wonglong.

The Simatai section of the Great Wall is located in the northeast of Miyun County, about 140 kilometers from downtown Beijing.

Constructed by the Ming Dynasty general Qi Ji Guang, it is one of the few stretches of the Wall that still preserves the original look of that period. It not only features unique points from other Great Wall sections but also shows some features found nowhere. To the west, there are 12 watchtowers snaking on the sloping hills. To the east, there are 16 watchtowers atop peaks up to 1,000 meters high.

The views are amazing, and the wall at Simatai has received very little renovation, retaining its original look. It is well beyond the reach of the great crowds of visitors who come to the more popular and easily accessible parts of the Wall.
